The Importance of a Good Hook

We literally have about two seconds before someone decides to scroll on past our video and a hook is just a way to grab your audience's attention so they stay and engage—it can be verbal or visual. 

I didn't know about hooks when I first started, but I inadvertently created three good ones and those three videos still get me the most sales and they are: 

• Hey! Raise your hand if you've heard of wild yam cream. Now, keep your hand up if you want to try it but you have no idea which one to choose.
• Six ingredients. Six.
• Where are my GenX-ers?  

Do you see how each one feels like I am speaking directly to you, peaking your curiosity just enough to make you want to keep watching? Well, let me tell you, these are flukes because I certainly have not mastered the hook! As a matter of fact, my last violation was for my hook and it was—can a four ounce jar of cream change your life? Can you spot what I did wrong there? I will talk about violations in another video. 😬

I haven't done well with visual hooks either I'm afraid. Visual hooks involve some kind of movement right at the beginning of your video like:

• Taking a sip of a drink
• Putting on Chapstick
• Zooming in
• Moving around/walking

You get the idea. One big content creator always plays with her bracelet and apparently that is a subconscious trigger to make you want to stay. There are a lot of underlying psychological elements at play with visual hooks, and honestly, it's one I need to get better at!

People will not stay to watch your content if they can't get something from it—some kind of value—can you offer a solution to their problem or satiate their need? They need to be inspired by your personality and how you present your products or they won't purchase from you. They hook literally reels them in and then the rest is up to you!
